Ministry Lunch - The Scribe Conversation Series: Preaching to the Imagination in a Secular Age
Speakers: Sarah Bobell, The Scribe Writing Center Coordinator, and Eric Stiller (MDiv, DMin), Pastor, Central West End Church
The Scribe Conversation Series seeks to facilitate community dialogue around using reading and writing as aids to our spiritual formation.
Rev. Stiller will present material from his DMin dissertation titled “A Picture Set Us Free: Preaching to the Imagination in a Secular Age.” One of the biggest challenges to preaching the Christian faith in the modern West is a growing inability to make sense of the basic categories that comprise a Christian worldview. Drawing on the work of Charles Taylor, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and others, the dissertation explores how preachers engage the imagination during sermons to help people in the closed or open immanent frame shift to an open transcendent frame.

More Info: Martyn Lloyd-Jones once described preaching as "the highest, the greatest, and the most glorious calling to which anyone can ever be called." In this series of lectures, we will delve into the profound responsibility of those who are set apart by God to proclaim his Word. We will explore three key aspects of the preacher's life: the craft of preaching itself, the common pitfalls that can undermine a preacher’s ministry, and the essential pursuit of personal holiness. Through these lectures, we aim to equip those called to this sacred task with the zeal, diligence, and reliance on the Holy Spirit necessary to fulfill their calling.
